Byron Ku Kukua, 58, of Captain Cook died June 14 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Kealakekua, he was a rancher for Hokukano and Hoomau ranches and a county Department of Public Works employee. Visitation 8-10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kona. Service at 10 a.m. Survived by sons, Keane Kukua of Kailua-Kona and Kuoio (Shellsea Lindsey-Naihe) Kukua of Hookena; hanai daughter, Lovia (Ben) Publico of Hilo; brother, Arthur Kukua of Las Vegas; sisters, Jeanette (George) Perreira and Marvalee Banagan of Kailua-Kona, Moani Kukua of Utah, Ardis Casuga of Milolii; five grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Toshiko Sumitani, 101, of Kaneohe, Oahu, formerly of Hilo, died June 18 in Kuakini Geriatric Care on Oahu. Born in Waiakea Camp 6, Hilo, she was a retired seamstress. Services held. Survived by daughter, Rena (Peter) Pappalardo of Kaneohe; brothers, Frank Yoshimura and Walter Yoshimura of Pearl City, Oahu; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
